Description: Since its foundation in 1989, NTUA-SDL is continuously conducting advanced research on ship design, ship safety and software development for the hydrodynamic analysis and assessment of performance and safety of ships and marine structures. Research activities in NTUA-SDL include: Ship design and optimisation,   advanced   marine   vehicles,   survivability   of   ships,   regulations   on   ship   stability, manoeuvrability  and maritime safety, formal safety  assessment  of ship design and operation, marine accidents analysis, risk-based ship design, technoeconomic ship databases, marine accidents databases, applications  of  artificial  intelligence  and  virtual  reality  techniques  to  ship  design  and  life-cycle modelling,  computer-aided geometric modelling,  solid  modelling  and  applications  to  shipbuilding.

Main tasks: NTUA-SDL as the Project Coordinator will be responsible for the overall administration and technical management  of the  project.  In addition  it will lead  WP5  (Adaptation/Integration  of Tools  – Multi- objective Optimization Platform) and will also participate in other tasks of the project with the exception of WP3.

Key Personnel:

Professor Apostolos Papanikolaou, Director of SDL, is chairman of the Exec. Committee of the International Marine Design Conference (IMDC), member of the ISSC Loads committee, former member of the ITTC Specialist Committee on Stability in Waves, member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Stability of Ships and Ocean Vehicles (STAB). He is/was technical advisor of the Union of Greek Shipowners for Passenger Shipping, Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and other IMO flag states. He has some 480 scientific publications and was awarded various prizes, among the most prestigious ‘Dr. K. Davidson’ medal for ‘outstanding achievements in ship research’ (SNAME, Seattle 2010). Assoc. Prof. George Zaraphonitis is teaching Ship Design at NTUA. His research interests include ship design and optimization, ship safety, design of advanced marine vessels, ship hydrodynamics. Dr. Shukui Liu is senior researcher of NTUA-SDL with PhD on ‘Nonlinear Time Domain Simulation of Ship Motions in Waves’. Dr. Eleftheria Eliopoulou is senior researcher of NTUA-SDL with PhD on ‘Probabilistic Approaches to Ship’s Damage Stability’.
